I first heard of Datura in the late 70s, and although I'm not sure where I first heard of it, it was almost certainly one of these sources: Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, by Hunter S. Thompson; The Teachings of Don Juan and its sequels, by Carlos Castaneda; or Hallucinogenic Plants (Golden Guide) by R. E. Schultes. Although I have never ingested Datura, and never will, I have had a decades-long fascination with it and its properties. It was held sacred in both the New and Old Worlds, and has been used by shamans for centuries (if not millennia) to induce visions. It is also highly toxic, and can induce long-term psychosis.
I recently had a Datura plant placed in my path during my morning walk. I very quickly developed a strong spiritual connection with it, and meditating on it has produced visions and wonders, without needing to ingest it. I'm hardly a wimp about such things. I've almost certainly smoked more cannabis than you. I've taken LSD, and ingested peyote and shrooms, many times. I'm a recovering heroin addict. If I had stumbled across this plant when I was in my 20s I almost certainly have would sampled it. But at 65 years of age, maintaining over 20 years of sobriety, I have nevertheless established a connection without feeling the need to ingest.
I've decided to put this Web site together to share some of the magic that Sacred Datura has brought into my life, and to share the techniques that have allowed me to build a rich spiritual experience around the plant, without ingesting. The story of Sacred Datura is a fascinating one and I hope the reader will share in my sense of curiosity and wonder. The links above this text block will guide one through my journey, and I will add content as my experiences continue.
